Annabel’s
Berkeley Square, London

The new Annabel’s was the subject of much anticipation prior to its opening, with the Vogue Fashion & Film Party coming together here to preview the pure fantasy and glamour of the new ‘Maximalist’ décor, and on completion was the front-page feature for the magazine The World of Interiors.

Having already made antiqued and Verre Eglomisé mirrors for The Ivy, and Sexy Fish, Tony Sandles Glass studios was delighted to be working closely again with the Martin Brudnizki design team, as part of the re-invention of Annabel’s Club. Moving two doors down from its subterranean home to a grand Grade 1 listed four storey Georgian townhouse in Berkeley Square, Mayfair.

A diverse range of specialist mirror finishes handmade in our studio have become thoroughly interwoven within the exuberant fabric of the club. The Rose Room features a series of our distressed silver leaf mirrors, all brilliant-cut, forming trompe l’oeil trellis integral to the epic scale of the fantasy garden murals. The Legacy Room is a masterpiece of bespoke mirrored cast glass elements: a stunning curved antiqued mirrored bar, ornate glass fireplace flanked by ionic glass columns, and golden hued mirror-panelled walls with antiqued glass cornices framing a collection of world class art.

A virtual tour of our creative output suggests itself, almost room by room.

Grand Staircase & Reception

On entering the reception hall, the elegance of the space is reflected in two large arched silver leaf mirrors either side of the Picasso re-named Annabel. On through double doors glazed with a lightly textured antiqued glass to the grand staircase. Here our work looms large, twenty five delicately antiqued silver leaf panels leading up the four storeys reflecting the eye-catching winged unicorn suspended beneath a hot air balloon! The petite oval mirrors embedded in the white stucco detailing appear as faded originals. An area described by House & Garden as ‘positively minimalist in comparison’ with the rest of the interior.

Rose Room & Garden Terrace

Featured around the stunning ground floor Rose Room and behind the dramatic pink marble bar our handmade distressed silver leaf panels combined with brilliant-cut grooves give the impression of trellis between the trompe l’oeil garden murals.

Our milky antiqued mirrors encircle the Garden Terrace, used on every wall behind green painted trellis and potted citrus fruits, to brighten the space by day and reflect the candle light by night.

The Legacy Room

The aged metal entrance door on the left, with its inlaid golden heavily antiqued mirrors and a push bar of impish monkeys leads into the totally mirrored Legacy Room. Transforming bare brick walls of a dark basement into an artist’s impression of a ‘mirrored room’, publicized by newspapers such as The Telegraph, before we knew how it would really come together, presented a career changing challenge! Without natural light the room gradually revealed its own otherworldly earthy characteristics, as our handmade antiqued mirrors were installed piece by piece, each reflecting the other. Crafted individually over a period of nine months, the bold, golden hued mirror panels and hundreds of antiqued cast glass sections combined to create a lustrous and unique intimate space, including an ornate glass fireplace flanked by mirrored glass ionic columns.  Ultimately, the bespoke mirrors perform as framing for a private art collection in a room accessed only by Legacy Members. Our pièce de résistance is the small but perfectly formed curved glass bar in the same finish which appears to emerge organically from the agate floor and beneath a mirrored glass canopy.

Nightclub Jungle Bar

Descending the tiger print carpeted curved stairs, with richly painted glossy red walls glowing with our Dark Cloudy mirrors marks the change of mood for the basement Nightclub.

Pause to look up at the ceiling of the reception corridor leading to the Jungle Bar and a geometric jigsaw of bevelled, Dark Cloudy antique mirror tiles add yet another dimension. As pictured in The Tatler, on each side of the corridor our distressed, diamond shaped silver leaf mirrors add depth to the barrel roofed Snugs with reflections of the vibrant textile surrounds.

Exotic birds, flora and animal prints blend into a kaleidoscopic mix reflected in the ceiling coving of the Jungle Bar constructed from a thousand precision-cut darkly antiqued mirror panels. At the far end of the corridor sitting between the Legacy Room and the Nightclub is the much-photographed gilded gorilla on a plinth clad with strips of our bevelled antiqued mirrors. In the Nightclub with the hydraulic dance floor – here our Dark Cloudy mirrored bar and our green rippled mirrors perform as glinting frames in harmony with murals of forest plants and giraffes, animal print sofas, brass and glass palm trees.

Mexican Room & Powder Room

Back upstairs on the first floor we created moon-gold mirrors for the Silver Room, a private dining space. The bar canopy of the exotic Elephant Room contains a myriad of our Dark Cloudy mirrors.

The back bar of the magnificent Mexican room, on the second floor, is made from hundreds of our Dark Cloudy mirrors.

Finally, our pink textured mirrors added to the exuberance of the Powder Room.

We would like to say that the creation of the entire club is a tribute to visionaries, artists and craftspeople on a massive scale, with attention to fine detail throughout, and we are very pleased to be associated with all the contributors.
